Wipeout 3 Special Edition gets a native dual-screen port for the AYN Thor

A solo dev built a static recomp of PS1 Wipeout 3: Special Edition for the AYN Thor, with 60 fps and a live second-screen HUD. Needs your own PAL disc.

A solo developer has posted a native Android port of PS1 Wipeout 3: Special Edition (PAL, SCES-02845) for the AYN Thor. It doesn’t run the game in an emulator. It’s a static recompilation built on PSXRecomp, and the whole thing is aimed at the Thor’s second screen. Frame rate is pushed to 60 fps with hueponik’s 60 fps patch, applied on the fly to your own disc image.

Why should a hobbyist care? Because the port does more than just run the game faster. The lower screen shows a live track map with all 12 craft, standings, lap times, speed, weapon and shield. Touch switches between the big map, full standings and lap breakdown. Menus get themed pages for each section, and race results list top speed, weapons used, damage taken and overtakes. There’s also a 38-achievement system checked against game memory, quick save with four slots, a photo mode on Select + Y, and an option to replace the CD audio with your own FLAC, OGG or MP3 files.

Under the hood, the author says the busiest scene, the Porto Kora start, dropped about 40% in emulation work compared to the first builds. There’s a “fast timing” mode based on block-based cycle counting, OpenGL by default, optional Vulkan, custom GPU drivers through adrenotools, and PGXP to stop wobbly textures. Widescreen works through the game’s own option, and in 4:3 the side bezels change with your team and track.

My take: static recomp has mostly been about big targets so far, and a PS1 racer on a handheld with a second screen is a different kind of experiment. It’s a fair sign that the toolchain is getting useful for smaller, older consoles too. That’s my opinion, not a verdict.

The catch is clear. You need your own legally dumped PAL copy, since no game data ships with the project. The post doesn’t say where to download the build, and the author calls it a work in progress, with some menu layouts still being polished. It’s a fan project, not affiliated with Sony, Psygnosis or The Designers Republic.
