ScratchPsx brings PS1 emulation to MS-DOS for vintage hardware and DOSBox-X
ScratchPsx is a new PS1 emulator for MS-DOS, featuring an x86 dynamic recompiler, VESA/VGA modes, and a 3dfx Glide renderer.
A new PlayStation 1 emulator called ScratchPsx has landed for MS-DOS, built to run on vintage machines ranging from a 486 up to a Pentium II or better. If you like pushing retro setups or testing unusual ports, this lets you explore PS1 software on classic DOS hardware or inside DOSBox-X.
The emulator includes a MIPS R3000 dynamic recompiler targeting x86 processors. For visuals, it supports standard VGA 320x200, mode X 320x240, and VESA 640x480 in 65,536 colors. It also features a 3dfx Glide renderer for Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 cards with SLI support, alongside Sound Blaster 2.0, Pro, and 16 audio, plus CD audio and XA playback. The interface uses menus drawn right over the game as a nod to Genecyst.
Demonstration footage shows it running under DOSBox-X, switching between the software renderer and a hardware-accelerated 3dfx Voodoo setup via YouTube.
How to try it:
- Grab the program files and check system requirements on the VOGONS thread.
- Set up a target environment like a physical 486-to-Pentium II machine or an emulator such as DOSBox-X.
- Configure your video output (VGA, VESA, or Glide) and audio settings depending on your hardware.
