Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) goes native on Apple Silicon Macs
A static recomp of the 2005 PC racer now runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs. v1.0 is out, and you bring your own Black Edition copy.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) now runs as a native app on Apple Silicon Macs. No emulator, no Wine, no CrossOver. The elforeign project hit v1.0 and translates the game’s own x86 code to C ahead of time, then builds it as an arm64 Mac app. You need your own PC copy: Black Edition, version 1.3.
The port uses a Metal renderer, native audio and native controller support. The author reports 4K at 60 fps on an M5 Pro MacBook Pro running macOS 27. Older macOS versions are untested. The default ‘Definitive’ look strips the Xbox 360 gold haze and adds glow, tunnel auto exposure, motion blur and cut-scene depth of field. ‘PC - Original’ shows the game as it shipped. The rear-view mirror is sharp now, with full scenery and police lights. There’s HDR output, 4x MSAA, a DualSense layout tested over USB and Bluetooth, and Extra Options built in natively. Fixes include cars vanishing in busy tunnels (a render memory pool ran out) and a freeze when you enter Customize.
The base comes from recomp-kit and nfsmw-recomp by veritr1x. elforeign adds the game’s configuration, the fixes, the core mod and a setup kit that builds everything on your machine. Nothing it builds is meant for sharing. The project says it isn’t affiliated with EA.
My take: static recomp has mostly lived in console land, in projects like N64Recomp and UnleashedRecomp. A 2005 PC game getting the same treatment for a Mac is a sign the method travels. The ‘bring your own copy’ model is also now the default for this scene, and I’d expect more of these ports to follow it.
How to try it:
- Own a PC copy of Black Edition 1.3. The project ships no game files and asks people not to ask where to get them.
- Download the Setup app disk image from the latest release and open it. It isn’t notarized, so click Done, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
- Choose your game folder and click Build. Expect about 10 minutes on a recent Mac, longer on older ones.
- Or skip the GUI and run ./setup.sh “/path/to/your game” from Terminal after cloning the repo.
Read the Getting started guide in the repo before you start. Troubleshooting is there too.
