Developer Tantric has released brand-new native Wii U ports for three classic emulators: Snes9xGX, FCE Ultra GX, and Visual Boy Advance GX. For anyone dusting off their Wii U to play retro games, these new builds bring hardware-abstracted performance, a built-in Game Boy Advance JIT enabled by default, and high-definition output up to 1080p complete with ScaleFX upscaler, sharp bilinear, and scanline shaders.

The project required deep changes across libraries like libmocha, libdvm, libntfs, and libsmb2. Network shares now rely on libsmb2 for modern SMB2/3 server support across GameCube, Wii, and Wii U. Players also get full GamePad integration with touch screen controls, button inputs, and rumble, plus support for Wiimotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers, and Wii U Pro Controllers. Storage-wise, the apps support SD cards alongside up to three hot-swappable USB drives formatted in FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS.

How to try it

  1. Make sure your console is running the latest Aroma release and that you have Mocha installed if you plan on using NTFS USB drives.
  2. Grab the latest .wuhb files directly from the individual GitHub release pages for Snes9xGX, FCE Ultra GX, or Visual Boy Advance GX.
  3. Launch the .wuhb file directly from the Wii U menu to ensure proper app launching and JIT functionality.
  4. Optionally, install Bloopair if you want to connect modern Bluetooth controllers like Switch Pro, Joy-Cons, DualShock, DualSense, or Xbox gamepads.
