A fan port of Minecraft Legacy Console Edition is running on the New 3DS XL. It's not public yet, and the old 3DS is still an open question.

A fan-made port of Minecraft Legacy Console Edition is running on the Nintendo 3DS, and the demo video on GBAtemp shows it on a New 3DS XL. The developer, GravityGRVT, says it holds a locked 30 FPS at 10 chunk render distance with fog disabled. Drop the render distance to 4-8 and the frame rate swings between 45 and 55 FPS. The footage is older, so the skybox has improved since.

The feature list is long for a handheld. The rendering engine is nearly finished, terrain generation matches the original, and block interactions work. There’s a 3D setting with pop and depth presets, an 800 pixel mode that doubles horizontal resolution, smooth lighting, and a day cycle. GravityGRVT calls the game heavily optimized.

The old 3DS is the catch. In early testing, the developer says it held 15-20 FPS, and they’re chasing a bottleneck that seems to sit very deep in the code. Asked about O3DS support, they haven’t committed. This isn’t a compile-and-fix job either. The developer says it’s almost a full rewrite, because the original source has too many platform dependencies. One commenter says source for an older legacy console version leaked recently. That’s a forum claim, not something the thread confirms. Crossplay with PS3 and PC is ‘hopefully at some point,’ and the question about online mods went unanswered.

Can you try it today? No. There’s no download, no public release, and no date. The developer promises technical details with the release. The official 3DS Minecraft is a separate product, Minecraft New Nintendo 3DS Edition, and the thread gets murky about which build counts as the official port.

If this ships, two things matter. Does it support the original 3DS, and does the leaked source base give modders real room to work? Until then, it’s a good video and a lot of promises.
