Halcyra rebuilds Rec Room from its 2017-2020 era for PCVR and Quest
A fan group is rebuilding the shut-down VR social game Rec Room as Halcyra. It runs on PCVR and Quest, but it isn't open to everyone yet.
A group of friends is rebuilding Rec Room, the VR social game that has since shut down, as a project called Halcyra. The build targets PCVR and Quest, and the poster says you can also play without a headset. They’re working from the game’s 2017-2020 era.
For anyone who missed it, the good news is that most of the old content already works. The post lists stunt runner, golden trophy, laser tag, paintball, and the dorms. Two showcase videos cover dodgeball and paintball, plus a bigger showcase of the build.
The team is still testing. They say they’re opening up soon, and updates and playtests happen on their Discord: discord.gg/sznEw7CFcX. The post doesn’t give a date or explain how access will work, so there’s nothing to download today. The project site is halcyra.net.
Why should you care? Online games often vanish along with their servers. A fan rebuild that keeps the 2017-2020 feel alive is the same preservation idea we see in emulation, just applied to a social VR space instead of a cartridge. If you own a headset, join the Discord and watch for a playtest invite. If you don’t, the showcase videos show what the rebuild looks like right now.
