GoldenEye 007 gets a native PC port at v0.5.0, built with AI coding agents
jkdansereau's GoldenEye 007 PC port hit v0.5.0 with 2-4 player split-screen. It runs on Windows, Linux and Steam Deck, and you still need your own ROM.

GoldenEye 007 for the N64 now runs as a native PC game. Version 0.5.0 of the jkdansereau port shipped on October 7 for Windows, Linux and Steam Deck. No emulator here. The port is the game’s own reconstructed C, rebuilt from the open decompilation and compiled for your PC. You still bring your own ROM.
The headline change is 2-4 player split-screen on every multiplayer map. Each player gets their own pad, controls and aim settings. There’s one options menu for everything, and the game’s own crosshair doubles as the mouse pointer. Per-player N64 control styles 1.1-2.4 are in, along with the Xbox presets. The project says it holds a steady 60 fps, and it was tested on an Intel HD 3000 laptop. Emulator saves work too: copy a 1964 or Project64 save in as data/ge007.eep and it converts on first launch.
The part that caught my eye is how it got made. One person, in their spare time, directed a fleet of AI coding agents (Claude Code and a local open-weight model). The repo calls itself as much a study of that process as a port. That’s the interesting bit. A big C codebase, a lot of agents, and a playable result. Whether the workflow holds up beyond this one game is the thing to watch.
How to try it:
- Grab the win64.zip (Windows) or the Linux tarball from Releases and extract it. On Windows, don’t run the exe from inside the zip.
- Make a data/ folder next to the executable. Put your ROM in it as ge007.ntsc-final.z64.
- Launch from that folder. SmartScreen may complain because the exe isn’t code-signed. Click More info, then Run anyway.
- The first start takes a few extra seconds while the port builds its asset files.
Limits: it’s pre-1.0, so expect missing pieces and breaking changes between versions. Only the US (NTSC-U) ROM works today. PAL and JP ROMs aren’t supported yet, and macOS, ARM Linux and Windows 7 are on the roadmap. On Steam Deck, add the executable as a non-Steam game.
